Growth Mindset

What is GrowthMindset?

Carol Dweck who is an American professor of Physchology who has won over 9 lifetime achievement awards for her research in physchology and sciences. Also has given a speach on Growth Mindset and intelligence in September 2018 in Dublins Royal College of Surgeons Ireland.

Carols theory on Growth and fixed Mindset is, shortened down, for growth mindset that a child or adult when faced with challenging task or work when failing or making a mistake, it leads you to the development of growth in that task, believing in suceeding, having a can do attitude. While Fixed Mindset is the opposite, when failing at a task your mindset is set at failing and not being able to continue to grow at that opportunity as you feel it is lost.

After seeing Carols TedTalk on her theory I do believe strongly on this, as it effects on our daily lives and how we think differently on progression from failing and suceeding.
If we imply this theory to a personal setting, like my leaving cert results back in 2014, after not getting what points I wanted for my course choices the mindset that followed related to Carol's theory at first was a fixed mindset that there could be no progression from that, but then with the options of many PLC courses, that changed the mindset for growing opportunities.

  1. This was a tremendous post Aaron. You perfectly summarised the growth and fixed mindset, the small personal story about your experience during and after the leaving cert was very touching and displayed how I imagine many people feel and how the growth and fixed mindset affects others.
