What is a game?

For this week, I've looked at the many ways games are created by gaming creators and through the publics eyes.

Game Definition: A start and end, mainly has a storyline or goal played solo or in a team or against one another, can be boardgame, playground game or game on console.

The first ever game was Atari Pong. Give it a go here! Pong Game

Arcade Game Pong

Released in 1972, Pong was the first arcade game, it consisted of 2 lines and a ball, both had to hit the ball back and forth to eachother.

Games are to be an escape from reality, a place to unwind and to be in the moment. A game is to have an understandable storyline, mission and end goal. Games that you are on a fixed mission like Crash Bandicoot where you have certain level to complete to move onwards that are straight forward and other games like Red Dead Redemption where its more open map landscape with optional progression missions or free roam complete side tasks. This makes the game last longer and less repetitive gameplay which some find more enjoyable to play.

Other games have modes where you control the path, the ending, this is a butterfly effect, games like The last of us P2 and Heavy Rain have suspense butterfly effect moments where the choice the player makes determinds the ending.

Mentioning those, games have techniques they follow creating them.

  • Concentration
  • Brainstorming
  • Scamper
  • Ramsey
Concentration

The most commonly used technique by everyone for cominging up with ideas and solutions not just for game developments, we probably don't need to tell ourselves to concentrate it's just automatic.

Brainstorming

The top method used in all companies/industries to come up with a basic plan or idea based on the topic being covered. This can range from mind-maps, stroyboards and scripts even mainly done in a team depending how big the operation is selecting roles and responsibilities working on strenghts within the team.

Scamper

An abbreviated word for techniques used, Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put, Eleminate and Reverse. This method is commonly used in game development for those working on a project that they may not particularly like and come up with these techques.

Ramsey

This method is more difficult than the others listed above. Follow the link below to find more information on these.
