Unity Tutorial

XR review

For my first unity tutorial I chose to look into XR, and this weeks tutorial included reviewing an XR app. The only app I could think of was the Pokemon Go app, which was a HUGE phenomenon back in 2016 when it released. Later updating along with the Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. So below is a detailed review of my use of the app and its XR features.

Application name and platform

The application I've tested is Pokemon Go on mobile (android) released 2016

Elevator Pitch

The app is is an adventure on the go pokemon game, where you can become the trainer anywhere you go. Theres spots where you can catch pokemon spinning and throwing the ball, and battling trainers in your area that you come across. The game is mainly location tracking based.

Target Audience

The apps target audience is mainly aimed at pokemon fans and anyone who enjoys an adventure based game. This really did serve its use and audience as five years on it is still in use and updating still.

XR Implementation

The game is an example of XR, where both Augmented and Virtual reality functions within the app. Being handheld, this AR and MR game takes advantage of this as it is location based and uses the camera function once a pokemon is ran into for capturing.

Supporting Technologies

Other supporting technologies help makes the app is the gps location and the camera on the smart phone. The location used helps pick up areas of pokemon and step count progression. The camera function places the pokemon around the surrounding area infront of the user as if it is really infront of them.

Application Strengths

The strengths related to this app include:
  • frequent updates
  • pokemon fans closest to the pokemon world
  • great development to a pokemon game
  • cross platform pokemon trading to console game (Pokemon Let's Go)

Areas for Improvements

Like many apps out there, they have there downfalls. With the Pokemon app itself any improvements to it I would include:
  • I would make the game more useable with a VR wearable headset, to fully immerse a player
