Game Fun

 Game Fun

What exactly is fun in gaming? When it comes to the meaning of fun, we all know it as to enjoy something that may be entertaining to do or watch. Gaming is perfect for this, a lot of people play games on console or pc to have fun, escape reality for a few hours(or days) and enjoy the virtual life feeling excitement and happiness.

Raph Koster, an author of a book called "The theory of fun for game design" says that

"the fun of a game comes from it's rich possibility to get better at it and offers a space for learning".

For instance, if a game has challenges in it's levels and if the player finds it hard to complete those, well it wouldn't entirely be "fun" for them, would cause stress most likely. But if they can complete those challenges at their level they feel acomplished and will power through the game and make it more enjoyable to play than feeling stressed and annoyed (like loosing in Fifa).

Certain types of games that would classify for learning are split into two different categories, so;

  • Type 1 games: Where we are ready to learn and challenge our thinking pattern.
  • Type 2 games: Where our reflexes and skills, memorising patterns and reflexing in shooter games.

With game fun being very similar to a previous blog post about the game flow, how game creators create a game and the flow of horror or challenges within a game will effect the players gameplay mood, either they have a fun time playing as the game is very good with sticking with the right amount of horror and good level of challenges or they are having a flat out boring time as its tooo easy or too hard and bad flow in the story.
